Job Fair wins my heart

Discussions at the TRU Career Education Booth

Wow another Job Fair over. Finally there is time in the day to write a blog post! This was my first ever Job Fair as an employer and what an experience. The students I saw looked professional, the other organizations booths looked great and we were constantly busy with traffic.  I thought the overall Job Fair really touched on all different sectors and there really was something for everyone.

I remember my last year at TRU as a student; I actually couldn’t attend the Job Fair because our program was on a field trip. However, another student gave my resume to a company that was in attendance, they called me for an interview, and that’s where I worked the summer after graduation! Even though I wasn’t in attendance I still made a connection and got a job from the Job Fair.

As a student, did you have a good experience with the Job Fair this year? What organization were you the most interested in? What organization surprised you?

As an employer, what was your overall impression with the students in attendance? Did you find some connections?

Hopefully everyone was as happy as I was with Job Fair this year. Next year’s fair will be on Thursday, March 7, 2013. Put it in your calendars now!

Top Tips for 2012 Graduates To Find Jobs

Here are some great tips taken from an article featured on ”Scoop Business“.

Top Tips for 2012 Graduates To Find Jobs

Clean up your online presence. The first thing employers will do is to see what they can find out about you on the Internet. Are you ready for that? They may look at your Facebook page during the interview. Are you ready for that?Look for WORK, not a JOB.Don’t scare off employers by communicating that you’re looking for a job and all the traditional benefits that go with it. Make it easy for them to hire you by making it clear that you are happy to accept part-time, temporary, or contract work. If you are equipped to work from home, tell them that too. It may appeal to them.Think.Put yourself in the shoes of any employer you plan to contact. Why would they be interested in you? What exactly do you have to offer them? Show them in your first contact with them that you know about them, the type of work they do and the industry they’re in. NEVER send out lots of resumes in a shotgun fashion.

Why should we hire you?Assume you’ll be asked this question during the interview and be ready to answer it. Focus on the key points you made in the material you sent to them. Those are what got you the interview.Bite your tongue.Talking too much in the interview is among the biggest mistakes graduates make according to employers and recruiters. The more prepared you are for the interview, the less inclined you’ll be to ramble on.Do your homework. There’s a wealth of information available on the employer’s web site. Amazingly, many graduates never take the time to thoroughly analyze this information and be ready to answer questions about it in the interview. It will also help if you can talk about some of the key issues going on in their industry.Create your own job.Instead of waiting for someone to offer you a job, consider what millions of graduates around the world have been doing for years; i.e. operate as a freelancer. The following will give you an overview of the world of freelancing:http://www.elance.com http://www.odesk.com http://www.vworker.comFinally, you may get some business ideas at: http://www.springwise.comRon McGowan is the author of the international bestseller “How to Find WORK in the 21st Century”, currently in use at over 400 colleges and universities worldwide.

“We’re not hiring right now… But if you’re the right person we are.”

Most students think that once they graduate, finding work will be easy. Who wouldn’t want to hire a young, enthusiastic, educated worker with fresh new ideas to bring to the table? Sadly this is usually not the case – students and new grads need to realize that they aren’t going to land the dream job right after graduation; or if they do – its because they worked hard for it during their university years.

“We’re not hiring right now… But if you’re the right person we are.”

This statement is all too true – employers will re-arrange their structure and hire you if they think you are the perfect person for the organization. Otherwise the statement will always be “We’re not hiring right now”. How do you show them you’re the perfect fit? You might want to think about networking, branching out, meeting people in the industry, meeting other business professionals in the community, volunteering, gaining experience, re-writing your resume… the list goes on. You never know who you could meet who might set you up with your dream employer.

Want to learn more about how to do this? Make an appointment today with one of our Student Employment Coordinators. They are here to help students make those connections, get a head start in building their network and gaining experience. Leaving this important factor to the last month of the last semester before you graduate is too late. Appointments are free – why not?

To book your appointment today, please visit the office in Old Main 1712, email careereducation@tru.ca, or call 250.371.5627.

Volunteer for a week in Los Angeles!

2012_web_banner

Are your students science? Are they art? Do they daydream of computations or calculate in creativity?  If so, they will be right at home at SIGGRAPH 2012. Science and art will come together in one outstanding international conference to explore computer graphics and interactive techniques from both points of view, and THEY can be a part of it!

The SIGGRAPH 2012 Student Volunteer Program is a unique opportunity for students to meet people involved in all areas of the computer graphics industry while contributing to the overall success of the SIGGRAPH Conference. The industry’s future leaders are encouraged to apply: students who demonstrate leadership, service, and a passion for computer graphics and interactive techniques.

As a Student Volunteer, students will go behind the scenes to help run an international event, which draws thousands of people who share a passion for advanced computer graphics technologies. The benefits of being a Student Volunteer extend beyond the free full admission conference pass to professional development and private Student Volunteer Special Sessions with top professionals who were once Student Volunteers themselves!

All of this is available to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students who are enrolled full time for at least one semester during the 2011-2012 academic year and are at least 18 years of age. Students can apply to volunteer for either 18 or 30 hours (approximately) during the conference. Volunteers who are willing to commit for at least 30 hours are eligible to apply for Travel Assistance Awards, which offer financial help for travel to and from the conference. The conference will run Sunday, 5 August through Thursday, 9 August, 2012 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. For more details on this wonderful opportunity, please check out: sv.siggraph.org
